This spectacular tour immerse you into the fascinating world of the glaciers that surround you on all sides. Walking among the five billion tonnes of ice covering a distance of 12 km is a surreal experience that one will never forgets.

This tour starts from the Diavolezza summit station across the Pers and Morteratsch Glaciers and back down to Morteratsch railway station. Sufficient stamina is needed to cope with the 5 hours hike and 1,100m altitude difference.

From the Diavolezza mountain station the hike leads down to the Pers Glacier, crossing it to the Isla Persa. From here the hike cross to the Morteratsch glacier along deep crevasses and waterfalls. We then follow the Morteratsch glacier up to its very end which leads us to the train station Morteratsch.

Diavolezza submit station

The cable car whisks you to up an altitude of almost 3,000 metres! From the station there are amazing views of Morteratsch glacier, the famous Piz Pal and Piz Bernina peaks. Truly breathtaking! It also boast the highest BBQ pit in Europe, which can be reached in a short 30 mins hike from the station. You can bring everything on your own or buy a fire making kit (CHF 8.50) and food at the restaurant near the cable car station.

Cable Car Station
Arrived very early in the morning.
Reaching Diavolezza Submit Station.
Reflection on the glass is interesting.

Even though this is the second time we are here, the scenery is still stunning as ever.

Getting on Pers Glacier

From the Diavolezza submit station, it takes 30 mins to reach Pers Glacier. Stepping onto the glacier itself is a surreal experience especially for those who live in hotter countries. Generally I do not like guided tours as I like to explore places on my own, but this glacier crossing is dangerous without a guide as there are many hidden deep crevasses beneath the glacier.

Walking down to the glacier edge. We are behind the group. Keep on taking pictures.
The guide told us that the glacier thickness has reduced by 100 m in the last 40 years !!!

We arrived at the edge of the glacier. It was an awesome sight.

Putting on crampon (spikes) on the shoes. All these can be rented from the shop.

Vincent is ready and looking cool with sunglasses. Actually it is a must to wear sunglasses when hiking on glacier. Glare is too powerful.

Surreal Experience on Pers Glacier

All ready to walk…
and jump…
The landscape here is alien to me.
Its a surreal experience walking on a glacier. Its hard to describe it. Imagine you are on top of a huge sheet of ice; extended as far as you eyes could see.
Morteratsch Glacier Hiking Switzerland
Surreal Landscape. Crevasses everywhere.

Pers Glacier Hiking

Streams and rocks everywhere…
We took so many photos until we lost sight of our guide. He gave up trying to ask us to go faster. Other tour members already went so far ahead. They just want to walk.

Crossing Rock Boulder

Instead of going straight down along the glacier, our escort guides us to the side of the glacier and climb up a rock boulder instead. Guess the glacier path ahead is dangerous.

Waterfalls

A huge rock hanging between a crevasses with waterfalls below. Awesome.
